Oak Hutch Cabinet in Shutter Gray
Every Friday, we like to inspire you with beautiful projects created by members of our Move Mountains With Milk Paint Facebook Group. This week, we chose to feature a lovely oak hutch cabinet refinished in Shutter Gray by Tammy of Farmhouse Fixup. Tammy is one of our newest retailers, and the first one in Spokane Valley, Washington!
What is a Hutch Cabinet Exactly?
A hutch cabinet is a piece of furniture that comes in 2 sections. The bottom is usually a cabinet base with shelving behind the doors. The top is typically made of either open shelving or shelving behind glass doors. Tammy’s hutch has some lovely features we’d like to point out to you.
Hutch Cabinet Features
This hutch has lots of lovely features we’d like to point out for your enjoyment. First, it has lovely ball and claw style feet. This style of furniture feet is usually found on antiques but it can also be found on reproduction pieces, like this one. Ball and claw feet are characterized by either a dragon’s claw, eagle’s talon or even a lion’s paw wrapped around a ball. These types of feet come in all different shapes, styles and size. Some are clutching a glass ball (common on piano stools) while others have a wooden ball (like those on this hutch).
This hutch also has a lovely serpentine curved top and bow fronted drawers.
The pulls on the drawers are “swan neck” pulls. They gracefully taper out in a pyramid shape and have curves like the neck of a swan. The handle connects to the drawer behind a set of matching rosettes and are usually made from brass.
The Before
Tammy bought this piece from a moving company believe it or not. Someone left it behind and never claimed it, which was a win for her!
It’s made from oak, which is a very heavy and dense wood. This piece weighed quite a bit and was a solid find! It had glass along the back and a working light. The glass was missing from the doors on top, so Tammy installed chicken wire for a charming farmhouse twist.
If you want to get the chippy look on a piece that has an existing finish, like that on this hutch cabinet, check out this blog post!
A Comparison of Grays
Tammy chose to refinish her beautiful oak hutch cabinet using Shutter Gray.
Shutter Gray was inspired by the antique pair of shutters shown in the collage below. It’s a French blue/gray that can lean blue, gray or even lavender depending on the lighting and what’s around it.
Schloss is our warm gray that leans beige. It’s our “greige” so to speak. Schloss is warmer than Trophy and doesn’t have the blue cast of Shutter Gray.
Here are all of those colors lined up so you can appreciate their nuances.
