Supplies Needed

To make Chris’ Milk Painted wooden speckled eggs, you’ll need the following:

  • Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in the colors Aqua Sky, Colonial Blue, Marzipan and Curio

  • Unfinished wooden eggs. You can source these from any craft store, Amazon or Walmart

  • Hemp Oil

  • Artist’s paintbrushes. We recommend anywhere from 1” to 3” in width

  • Shop towels or lint-free cloths

  • Toothbrush or similar-sized cleaning brush

You can shop for MMS Milk Paint supplies from your local retailer or from any of our online retailers by using our map.

Step 1 - Mix Milk Paint

In this tutorial, Chris is going to help you create two different types of eggs.

To make robin eggs:

Mix equal parts Colonial Blue with Aqua Sky. Chris’s exact measurements were 1 tablespoon of each color and 2 tablespoons of water.

To make quail eggs:

Mix 1 tablespoon of Marzipan with 1 tablespoon of water.

If you need help with mixing, you can watch our tutorial video below:

To know you have the right consistency for your Milk Paint, Chris suggests taking a stir stick and dipping it into your paint. If it comes off in a nice straight line, or ribbon, you’ve got the right mix! If it’s drippy, then add more powder. If it’s clumpy and lumpy, then add more water. It’s normal to have some lumps and clumps, but if it looks more like brownie batter, add more water.

Step 2 - Paint Wooden Eggs

Once your Milk Paint is just the right consistency, grab a small artist’s paintbrush and begin applying two coats on each egg. You can do half of your eggs in the robin egg blue color, and the other half in Marzipan. It’s up to you!

Because the eggs are a bit awkward to handle, Chris suggests painting one side and letting it dry. Then, paint the other side.

Clever, huh?

Repeat the process for the second coat.

Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint is THE best paint to use on raw wood. It soaks in fast and gives you gorgeous color. You can read more about how our Milk Paint behaves on raw wood in the blog post below:

Step 3 - Add Speckles to Eggs Using Curio

To make the little speckles on your eggs, mix up a super small batch of Curio - a pinch of Curio and a pinch of water. You don’t need much for this step!

Using a toothbrush, dip it into the Curio and remove the excess by tapping it against your cup. Again, you don’t need much paint for this step. You don’t want Curio to be dripping from the toothbrush.

Using a flicking motion, rub a finger down the bristles to splatter Curio over one half of the egg. Chris recommends turning the egg as you do it.

Let your Curio speckles dry, and then flick Curio onto the other side of your eggs.

Let that side dry too.

Step 4 - Seal Eggs with Hemp Oil Wood Finish

Once your eggs are completely dry, squirt a few drops of our Hemp Oil Wood Finish into a small dish. Using a brush, paint a layer of Hemp Oil all over one of your eggs.

Using a shop towel or lint-free cloth, gently buff away the excess Hemp Oil.

Repeat the process with the rest of your eggs.

Add Eggs to Spring Decor

You can incorporate your eggs into your home decor by adding them to a table centerpiece. Give them as gifts in an Easter basket. Or, add them to place settings around your table.

However you display them, these Milk Painted eggs will be little accents you can enjoy year after year!
