Milk Paint on Raw Wood

Milk Paint is the Best Paint for Raw Wood!

We all love the chippy goodness that can be created with Milk Paint, but it looks just as gorgeous on raw wood. Because it soaks in similar to a stain, Milk Paint is THE best paint to use on a raw wood surface with no existing finish.

Milk Paint’s Thin Consistency Acts Like an Opaque Stain

Milk Paint has been around for thousands of years and is recognized as one of the earliest known paints. When you look at it from a historical perspective, it makes total sense. At the time Milk Paint was invented, women weren't getting crazy ideas from DIY blogs and Pinterest, hunting for the right thing on Craig's List and then sweetly asking their husbands to recruit a couple of guys and a truck to pick it up. When Milk Paint was invented, a woman would look longingly at a tree and sweetly ask her husband to hack it down and make a table out of it.

Furniture back in the day wasn’t made from mdf or particle board - it was made from REAL wood!

Raw real wood to be exact. (Try saying that 3 times fast!)

The perfect paint (and one of the few) that was used on wooden pieces of the past was Milk Paint! Now we at Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint have modernized traditional powdered Milk Paint somewhat, but the basic ingredients are still the same.

It's thinner than modern paints and is highly pigmented. Because of its thin nature, it absorbs into raw wood like a stain instead of sitting and drying on top like other paints. That being said, you still get the opaque look of paint with the absorbable quality of a stain!

Milk Paint Stays on Raw Wood Practically Forever!

If you find a true antique piece with the original paint on it, chances are it’s Milk Paint! It’s also incredibly difficult if not impossible to remove. Ask anyone who's tried to strip true powdered Milk Paint from a piece of furniture. They’ll probably roll their eyes and advise you not to attempt it! Once Milk Paint soaks into raw wood, it’s not going anywhere for a VERY long time!

Chances are, most of the pieces you may paint will have an existing finish, but we encourage you to try it on raw wood too.
