Choose Your Chalkboard

We like to use old mirrors and frames for our chalkboards. This mirror was one that Miss Mustard Seed brought to Lucketts Spring Market one year. It didn’t go home with anyone, so she decided to turn it into a chalkboard!

Paint the Frame

Before you paint your chalkboard, we suggest you paint the frame of your project first. With so many gorgeous colors for you to choose from, there are endless possibilities™!

Miss Mustard Seed chose to use Farmhouse White for her frame.

Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint’s Vintage Green Chalkboard Mix

As your frame is drying, mix up a batch of our vintage green chalkboard color. This lovely bespoke mixture was first whipped up by Allison from The Golden Sycamore when she created her Vintage Chalkboard Wall.

Her color recipe is 2 parts Ink Blue + 3 parts Boxwood.

The “part” can be any unit of measurement you wish - grams, tablespoons, cups, liters, etc. For most of our chalkboard projects, we use tablespoons.

If you want to make a traditional black chalkboard, simply mix up a batch of our beautiful Typewriter.

If you plan on transforming a mirror into a chalkboard, add our Bonding Agent into your bespoke mixture. This will help Milk Paint adhere to glass (or metal).

Paint Your Chalkboard

Once your vintage green chalkboard color is mixed, it’s time to paint! Apply 2 coats to your chalkboard area. This could be the middle of a frame, a piece of plywood, etc. The possibilities are endless!

Season Your Chalkboard

Before you start using your chalkboard, it needs to be “seasoned”. Rub a piece of chalk all over your chalkboard area. It will get a little messy, but have fun with it!

Use a soft cloth to wipe away the excess chalk. This will give your chalkboard that smeary “chalkboardy” look.

This step is essential because it will keep your drawings and lettering from being burned or etched into the surface. If you don’t season your chalkboard, anything you write will still be visible even though you wipe it away.

Anything Can Be A Chalkboard!

We encourage you to get creative with your chalkboarding! Anything can be transformed into a chalkboard. Here’s how Miss Mustard Seed’s antique mirror turned out…

You can even chalkboard furniture! Take this drabby vintage highboy dresser for example. Miss Mustard Seed found it in this state.
