Custom Wrapping Paper, Stockings, and Tree Skirt
Inspiration
While flipping through the Winter 2022 Edition of Country Sampler Farmhouse Style, we saw this cute idea to create custom wrapping paper by splattering paint. We loved the organic look of this wrapping paper style and thought it would fit well with our other Nordic-Inspired Christmas DIYs.
While perusing HobbyLobby.com, after finding our wooden stars and trees, we came across burlap stockings. We knew burlap was a great option for our neutral palette. Although burlap is not Nordic-inspired, it adds texture while remaining subtle. We love it so much that we used it for the tree skirt as well.

Wrapping Paper
You can cut the paper down to the size of gifts/boxes or start with a large sheet of paper to cut down later. Mix MilkPaint™ in a 1:1 ratio, making sure it is the consistency of table cream. If the paint is too thick, add a bit more water. Lay paper out and flick all colors (Ironstone, Schloss, Typewriter) onto the sheets of paper using a toothbrush or small craft brush. Continue until the desired look is achieved. Allow the paint splatter to dry fully.
If you started with a large sheet of paper, cut it down to the size of your gifts/boxes. Wrap boxes/presents and add a ribbon of choice and any added accents (i.e., pine twigs, berries, decorative tags, etc.). We used 3 different sizes of black and natural striped ribbon, hoping to give a nod to the stocking and tree skirt.
*Note: depending on the type of paper you use and the consistency of the paint, you may experience some transfer of colors when it is dried. To avoid this, lightly rub the paint splatters to remove any residue.
Burlap Stockings and Tree Skirt
We love the look and feel of old burlap grain sacks and thought that a look grain strip would be charming added to our stockings and tree skirt. This brings a bit of vintage charm to our Nordic-inspired decor.
To start, we removed the buttons and ribbon from the stockings, which created a blank space to paint a grain stripe.
Next, we taped off a 1-inch stripe in the middle of each stocking and the tree skirt (straight across from the back split) using blue painter's tape. If you have a stencil, you can use it in place of tape.
To paint designs onto fabric, you want to have a thicker consistency of paint. We mixed our Typewriter in 2 parts powder to 1 part water. We painted this stripe with 1 coat of MilkPaint™, making sure to brush slowly next to the tape edges to prevent bleeding.
We only applied one coat to help give a worn look. The grain stripes will also continue to wear with use and over time. After the main stripe was dry, we remove the tape and taped off a 3/8 inch line on each side of the main stripe to create a grain stripe design. We applied paint in the same way as the main stripe.
Remove the tape, and they are complete!
Final Reveal
All of the elements on their own may not seem to coordinate, but the neutral color scheme, vintage elements, natural fibers, and pinecones, blended with the gnomes, made a charming Nordic-Inspired decor scheme.

Buffalo Check and Burlap Ornaments
Now it was time to pull everything together, starting with the tree. Starting at the bottom, we layered the tree skirts for more texture. We only added grain stripes to the smaller skirt. Next, we added all of our ornaments to the tree, starting from largest to smallest. We finished off our tree with a handmade wooden star topper. Instead of hanging our stockings from the mantel, we hung them from a wall organizer behind the tree. This is a great way to incorporate your current home decor into the holidays.
We placed our striped trees and presents under the tree. We also incorporated a wooden crate and a vintage black truck next to our tree. The wooden crate was set on its side so that we could place a few presents in the crate.
Next, we moved on to the mantel. We paired our star garland with a burlap and buffalo check garland. Next, we added pine boughs to the top of the mantel, adding pinecones to match the pinecone wreath hanging above the mantel. We added the snowy pinecones we created last year, in addition to plain pinecones.
In the center, we added two handmade wooden stars that match our tree topper and correlate with the star garland. Finally, we added light green candles to our lanterns and candlesticks that remain on the mantel.
