Custom Shades of Blue

All of the colors in the Miss Mustard Seed’s® Milk Paint line are beautiful straight out of the pouch - especially our blues! Did you know that you aren’t limited to those on our color chart? You can explore endless possibilities when you start mixing them together!

We’d like to stir your creative juices and inspire you with some custom shades of blue we mixed up in the MilkPaint™ laboratory! To make these custom colors, we started with our three true blues - Artissimo, Flow Blue and French Enamel.

Our True Blues

Even though we only used our three true blues (Artissimo, Flow Blue and French Enamel) to make our custom shades of blue, don’t limit yourself to just these three. We have lots of blue/greens (Eulalie’s Sky or Kitchen Scale) and blue/grays (Aviary or Bergere) to choose from!

Here’s how our true blues look when they’re mixed up straight out of the bag. We finished each of our sample sticks in our buttery soft clear Furniture Wax. We find this topcoat keeps your color as true to the original as possible. (The color will darken slightly, but not as much as it will with our other finishes.)

Isn’t it so magical to see how such beautiful blues can come from a few scoops of MilkPaint™ powder?

Artissimo + Flow Blue

Our first custom MilkPaint™ color was created by mixing equal parts Artissimo with Flow Blue. We decided to use equal parts for all of our custom mixes. This makes things a bit easier!

Notice how it has the inky blue depth of Artissimo with a hint of vibrance from the Flow Blue? Imagine this custom color chipped on an antique dresser or topped with Antiquing Wax for a rich finish! Wouldn’t it pair nicely with pops of Apron Strings, Outback Petticoat or even Boxwood? We can see this color combined with white bone or marble hardware, a beautiful jute rug and a collage of antique mirrors!

Artissimo + French Enamel

French Enamel is much lighter than Flow Blue, and it reminds us of a cloudless summer sky.

Notice how combining equal parts Artissimo and French Enamel results in a slightly lighter shade of blue?

This combination would look amazing with antique pieces of ironstone or a bright green Fiddle Leaf Fig tree! Have a camel-colored leather chair? Imagine a side table painted in this custom color nestled right next to it with a cup of coffee and your favorite book.

Dreamy, eh?

Flow Blue + French Enamel

Combining equal parts Flow Blue and French Enamel results in the lightest of our custom shades of blue.

While this color may look like French Enamel at first, it actually has a bit more saturation thanks to the addition of Flow Blue.

Can you picture this color in tandem with Farmhouse White? Doing a hand-painted stencil design on a piece painted in this custom color would certainly stand out!

Simple Ingredients - Gorgeous Colors - Endless Possibilities™

We kept our custom color formulas pretty basic with these three examples, but there’s no limit to how many colors you can combine and in what ratios.

Here’s how all of these beautiful blues compare with our original three true blues.

Can you see how adding a hint of a new color takes the original shade in a whole new direction? Look at how French Enamel gets brighter and more saturated with a scoop of Flow Blue.

Fun isn’t it?
