Curio
Let’s chat about October’s MMSMP Color of the Month. It’s our rich brown, Curio!
Curio cabinets are fine pieces of furniture with glass panels meant to show off the precious treasures inside. This handsome shade of brown has elements of walnut wood and formal "cabinets of curiosity."
Curio is available in our new 100% natural, eco-friendly formula.
So how do you finish your painted pieces? Curio changes colors from raw (no finish) to applying finishes. To see how our brown changes with each finish, take a peek at this photo:
Now let’s look at a few pieces where Curio was used!
Creating a Base for a Distressed Finish
Curio can be used as a base for any chippy or distressed finish. It gives an authentic aged feel. Nancy from Fresh Coat Finishes created this charming bread box. She painted the base in Curio, then painted the piece in Tricycle. On distressed areas of this bread box, you can see the Curio base peeking through - giving it an authentically aged look.
Furniture Concept also used Curio as a base under Teal Ocean and Aviary on this distressed wardrobe.
Paint to Stain
One of our favorite ways to use Curio is as a stain! You can mix it in a ratio of 3 parts water to 1 part powder for a gorgeous rich stain.
Curio as a stain is similar to walnut or dark walnut, depending on the number of coats applied. *Please note that the color may vary depending on the type of wood you are staining. When using a stain ratio, it may take 2-3 coats to get the color and coverage you want. You can apply MilkOil™ Indoor/Hemp Seed Oil to create a rich finish.
Kathy Young from The Upstream Home used Curio to refinish the top of a table. She painted the base in Typewriter for an industrial feel. Learn more about this table transformation here.
Morgan from Revivals Furniture Co paired Curio and Typewriter to create this sophisticated dresser. The drawers are stained in Curio, and the base is painted black. Morgan added some light distressing and used black metal pulls to finish off this piece.
When staining with Curio, you can focus on a portion or the entirety of the piece to change the style. These two desks by Klaudia of Furniture Concept are a great example. On one, she stained the entire desk in curio, then paired it with a natural chair. For the other, she only stained the top of the desk and painted the base in another color for a two-tone farmhouse look.
Endless possibilities
MilkPaint™ allows for endless possibilities. This room setup by Furniture Concept uses Curio in three ways, showing the versatility of our powdered MilkPaint™. Can you guess where and how she used it?
Curio was used as a base for the hutch, a stain for the interior cabinet, and as a stain for the shiplap!
The possibilities of Curio MilkPaint™continue! Did you know that you can use MilkPaint™ to paint art on furniture? Morgan of Revivals Furniture Co is a pro at creating art with MMS MilkPaint™. She used Linen as a base on this dresser, then painted a cow print with Curio.
Morgan also created this stunning highland cow dresser. She used a combination of Curio, Mustard Seed Yellow, and Linen to paint the cow front.
