A Spring Gathering Tablescape

Getting ready for a gathering? You can spruce up your tablescape with MMS MilkPaint™.

So what products and colors did we use to create a beautiful and food-safe setup? Our Spring color palette included Dried Lavender, Farmhouse White, Lucketts Green, and Sunkissed. We used MilkGrip™ Indoor/Bonding Agent to ensure a smooth, non-chippy finish on all of our items, and we finished everything in MilkWax-ECO™ Natural for a food-safe finish.

Elevate your Serving Ware

To elevate our serving ware, we painted everything in our spring color palette.

First, we painted the wooden serving spoon handles in Sunkissed for a cheery look. Our spoons had a previous finish over the wood, so we used mineral spirits to soften and remove the finish. We then used a mixture of 50/50 denatured alcohol and water to remove any trace of mineral spirits to keep our spoons food-safe.  Next step paint…we added MilkGrip™ Indoor into our MilkPaint™ and painted two coats onto our taped-off spoon handles. So why did we add MilkGrip™ if the spoons were wood? To ensure we had a smooth finish and that the paint could endure high use and handwashing.

Next, we painted a wooden serving board in Dried Lavender for a soft pop of color. The board had a finish, and although we sanded, we noticed that our MilkPaint™ wasn’t sticking properly to the board… so what was causing this? It was the finish. Some modern finishes are meant to deter stains and prevent water absorption, making it difficult for MilkPaint™ to adhere. So we opted to remove the finish just like we did with the spoons and added MilkGrip™ to our paint to ensure proper adhesion.

We finished both our spoons and board with MilkWax-ECO™ Natural. Why did we choose this finish? This premium natural food-contact-safe wax creates a durable, washable finish, that is perfect for serving ware that needs to be washed. *Note: items finished in MilkWax-ECO™ should be hand washed only.

Lastly, we added a painted basket to our serving ware, for holding bread. You can learn more about the steps for painting baskets in this post.

Adding some greenery

Fresh flowers and potted plants are perfect for adding a cheerful feel to any tablescape. One way to spruce up terra cotts flower pots is to white-wash them for an authentic limed look. To whitewash with MilkPaint™, we recommend mixing 3 parts water to 1 part powdered paint. Then brush one coat of your wash over the pot and dab with a wet paper towel or rag. This will create more of an aged weathered look.

Another fun thing to add to a spring tablescape is custom candlesticks. Anna from Sky Lark House created these candlesticks out of table legs.
